Merdeka 118 — a skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur with a height of 679 meters, built in 2023.

Merdeka 118 has become the second tallest building in the world after Burj Khalifa in Dubai (828 meters). It is also the tallest building in Malaysia and the entire Southeast Asia region.

The building was officially opened by the King of Malaysia on January 10, 2024, but construction work inside is still ongoing. The observation deck, Park Hyatt hotel, and shopping center are expected to open no earlier than the 2nd to 4th quarter of 2024.

In Malay language, “Merdeka” means “independence.” The tower received its name from the nearby Merdeka Stadium, where in 1957, prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman declared Malaysia’s independence from Britain.

According to reports, approximately 5 billion ringgit (1.07 billion dollars) was spent on the construction of the tower.
